Description and objective: Provides theoretical and practical knowledge in the techniques of asbestos sample identification using polarised light microscopy. The course covers asbestos fibre types, properties and uses, set up and use of a polarised light microscope, analysis theory including colour, pleochroism, birefringence, signs of elongation, extinction and dispersion staining, analysis of bulk samples and practical work. There is a written examination and practical assessment. Suitability: UKAS now require that this qualification is obtained for those undertaking the analysis of bulk samples on a routine basis.
