Description and objective: In the twenty-first century workplace it is increasingly common for individuals at all levels to take career breaks, encouraged by enlightened and supportive employers who wish to continue their investment in valued employees. A break can be for any number of reasons - family (childbirth, caring for dependents), personal development (travel, further education) or as a result of trauma (illness or bereavement) and can be for any period from months to years.
However, those returning to work face identical challenges in having to pick up the reins, reach a rapid understanding of a changed environment and forge ahead in their resumed career. Whether stepping back into their previous position, or tackling a new job or even a new employer, re-starters need to develop a clear strategy for fitting back in when the context and criteria for success may have dramatically changed.
Even the most able can experience lack of confidence and suffer irrational fears of being unable to catch up with systems, technology and colleagues or subordinates who have now overtaken them. Achieving a balance between previous knowledge and skills and meeting new and ever-changing challenges can also present difficulties. The good news is that by consciously managing the process, returners can reduce the risks and go on to have highly successful, enjoyable and fulfilling resumed careers.
